'Sea of Thieves' Install Size Reduced To 25GB in February

March 2024 · 3 minute read

Sea of Thieves continues to add content and bug fixes, but a major update on February 6 will make it easier to keep the pirate adventure hanging around on your Xbox One or PC hard drive. This information comes from a post on the Sea of Thieves website.

The update on February 6 is said to be a larger update than normal, but once everything has finished downloading and installing, the file size for Sea of Thieves will decrease. Xbox One owners will see the Sea of Thieves file size drop from 35GB to 10GB, Xbox One X gamers will see the 47GB install dip to 25GB and PC gamers will see their 47GB install drop to 27GB. That's some impressive optimization.

While the total file size will decrease, Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate said patch sizes will increase based on how the reworked file structures operate. Although patch sizes will get larger, the overall size of the game itself will not bloat significantly. "If we didn't make this change, the game install size would continue to increase, taking up more and more of your hard drive space," he said in the post.

Another major benefit for this restructuring is that it makes it easier to create and transfer builds. This means the developers at Rare can operate on a faster schedule and provide new updates to players more efficiently than ever before.

It should be noted that the February 6 update that drops the file size will download and fully reinstall the game on your console or PC. If it looks like your game was deleted during the patch process, then everything should be working as planned.

In other Sea of Thieves news, the most recent update improves loading times and has an option to scale the text in chat to a different size. The 1.4.2 patch also ends the festive holiday events in Sea of Thieves, along with fixing a number of bugs and other glitches. The full 1.4.2 patch notes are as follows:
